When visiting the Yucatan Peninsula [Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum & Quintana Roo] you MUST experience a Mayan jungle adventure!

You’ll get to explore the Sac-Actun cenote system IE the world’s longest underground river, recommended by National Geographic Snorkeler special cave divers. I will never forget this amazing and unique Mayan jungle adventure experience!

You’ll begin by repelling into the cenote and participating in a traditional Mayan purification ceremony.

Cave Repelling In Mayan Jungle

The Mayans view the cross as a symbol of the earth and anything below the horizontal cross line is considered the underworld. In order to enter this sacred place you need to request permission and be cleansed in a traditional ceremony.

The water is pristine and it is the primary drinking water for the Mayan people. Shoving our mosquito repellent-covered bodies in it would guarantee contamination, so they require you to take a shower before entering.

After the ceremony and cleansing you then swim in the natural pool, Yaxmuul, and snorkel in the Nohoch Nah Chiich cavern while surrounded by amazing stalactites and stalagmites.

Also, you get to fly over the jungle’s foliage on awesome zip-lines. It was fantastic!! It was my first time zip lining and I could not stop smiling and giggling. The final line descends into a dark water-filled cave.

The guide requested that we lift our legs so our bums would hit the water stopping us at the proper landing spot. I, however, was laughing too hard to lift my legs resulting in a skipping rock effect. I ended up plummeting myself to the back of the cave!

Scariest. Moment. Ever. I was alone in a dark cave in dark water with only my imagination of what was swimming around me! Believe me when I say I could have beaten Micheal Phelps in swim race at that moment. Ha!

I swam to the guides in record time and ended the adventure with an off road ride through the gorgeous rain forest.

We also were invited to visit the local village and eat a traditional home cooked meal from a lovely Mayan family. I highly recommend exploring this region and my suggested tour group is AllTournative. They host small groups with special tour guides and provided all the photos in this post [I just edited them a bit].
