What is a dangling carrot you ask? And why does Amy hate them?!
A Dangling Carrot (aka what Amy hates): A metaphor for an unattainable goal that if somehow achieved will not be as rewarding as originally perceived AND shall instantly be replaced with new dangling carrot.
Pursuing the dangling carrot can become an addiction that is difficult to break. Read my carrot-chasing story here. The following motivational mentors, authors & resources inspired me & gave me the cojones I needed to make some big changes in my life…
…the switch from chasing the dangling carrot to following my heart! Definitely pick up at least one of these reads for some awesome carrot repellent. I hope they will bring you inspiration!
It is silly to admit that as an adult human I knew very little about what I loved doing and what my strengths were. However, it isn’t that surprising because we live in a culture that focuses mostly on correcting our weaknesses rather than celebrating our strengths.
We tend to chase the self-improvement carrot to better fit a job description rather than searching for a job that fits us. So for me the best place to start was at the very beginning and that was…
…figuring out what I was passionate about.
Now, Discover Your Strengths is a wonderful book by Marcus Buckingham that comes with access to an online strength finder test. Your results are described in perfect detail to give you a full understanding of what your true strengths are. Love it!
Two other great reads are:
The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level by Gay Hendricks and The Education of Millionaires: Everything You Won’t Learn in College About How to Be Successful by Michael Ellsberg.
Both were extremely eye opening for me. Not only do we stand in our own way often but we base ‘what we are supposed to do’ on dated unrealistic norms created by society. Being normal = not all it’s cracked up to be. 😉
Once you know your strengths and passions you can determine how to turn them into a life of purpose. How can you use these to help others and create your dream job?
Your dream job doesn’t exist. You must create it!
For me, this blended into a quest for an entrepreneurial lifestyle that I could design. If you do want to start a business and/or blog and never chase someone else’s carrot again you have come to the right place my friend! Check out my Grow Your Blog & Biz section for a library of FREE resources.
Also, I really can’t say enough about the fabulous Marie Forleo.
She has tons of great and entertaining info on MarieTV but in addition she offers an annual online business school (BSchool) for those who want to create a life and business they love. This course offers a plethora of essential information for anyone starting a business or already owning one. And as if you needed more incentive…once you signup you are a member forever!
Reading the following book recently, absolutely changed my life as well.
I NEEDED to read every single word! If you are a creative in any way, shape or form then I really can’t recommend Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert enough. Watch this video with Marie and Elizabeth to get inspired STAT!
Some other inspiring reads for me were Tim Ferriss with his luxury lifestyle design theory & Chris Guillebeau and his unconventional guides.
Tim Ferriss’ book The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich (Expanded and Updated) teaches you about luxury lifestyle design. It breaks my heart when people wait until retirement to really live and this book provides a blueprint on how to avoid this and be a part of the new rich.
Meanwhile, Chris’ books are full of awesome information about starting a business with very little money upfront [The $100 Startup: Reinvent the Way You Make a Living, Do What You Love, and Create a New Future] and overall inspiration to pursue your quest [The Happiness of Pursuit: Finding the Quest That Will Bring Purpose to Your Life].
Even with all the finest resources, following your heart is still scary.
Fear is a funny thing. Technically, it is excitement in disguise. Taunting you. Encouraging excuses. Embrace the uncomfortable butterflies and excitement. A life of purpose begins at the end of your comfort zone.
What would you do if you weren’t afraid? After all, the real risk is doing nothing.
Trust me no carrot is ever worth it! Don’t be afraid to fail…be afraid not to try instead. Because in the end we only regret the chances we didn’t take!
Thank you so much for reading! Won’t you pursue a carrot-free life with me?! Have any favorite inspirational reads I didn’t mention? Please let me know in the comments below.
